Throughout my life I‘ve been very intrigued by historical stories. One of my dream projects was telling the story of the Admiral ‘Michiel de Ruyter', one the biggest Dutch heroes who deserved a work of passionand grand filmmaking. The Netherlands was the first republic country in the world, surrounded by kingdoms who wanted to stop the successful commerce that the Dutch trading ships had established across the globe.
I wanted to create a world that would bring the audience back to the 17th Century. The films visual inspiration is derived from the works of Dutch master painters Rembrandt and Vermeer. The challenging seabattles had to look real and affect audiences visually and emotionally. The story had to be both intimate and epic. — Roel Reine
