Roel Reiné is an award-winning Dutch director whose body of work spans a wide range of high-profile feature films and television series for major studios including Universal, 20th Century Fox, Sony, Lionsgate, Netflix, Disney, Starz, Paramount, and many more.

He first rose to prominence with his theatrical debut The Delivery, which earned him the Dutch Academy Award for Best Director in 2000. In 2015, he received another Best Director nomination for the historical epic Michiel de Ruyter. His acclaimed films Admiral and Redbad have won numerous awards at international film festivals, further cementing his reputation on the global stage.

Reiné is widely recognized for his bold, commercial sensibility and distinctive visual storytelling. With a versatile artistic skill set that includes directing, cinematography, writing, and producing often through his company Rebel Entertainment he has carved a unique path in both European and Hollywood filmmaking.

His 2015 feature Admiral (Michiel de Ruyter), a sweeping Dutch-language historical epic, was released theatrically worldwide and achieved remarkable success despite facing stiff competition from Jurassic World and Fast and Furious. It ranked among the top ten highest-grossing Dutch films of 2015 and captivated audiences with its gripping story of 17th-century naval commander Michiel de Ruyter, who steered the Netherlands through civil unrest and a series of legendary sea battles. The film won Best European Movie at the Toronto Film Festival.

After establishing a strong foundation in Hollywood over a decade, Reiné transitioned into high-end U.S. television, directing episodes for major shows such as Black Sails (Starz) and Blood Drive (Syfy). In 2017, he helmed the pilot episodes of Marvel's Inhumans for Marvel Studios and IMAX the first TV series pilot released globally in IMAX theaters before airing on ABC and later streaming on Disney+.

That same year, he returned to Europe to direct the historical feature Redbad, which earned international acclaim and multiple awards for Best Director, Best Cinematography, and Best Foreign Language Film at various festivals around the world.

Between 2018 and 2019, Reiné directed large-scale television productions including the medieval epic Knightfall, packed with intense battle scenes, and the martial-arts-driven Wu Assassins for Netflix. He also directed a feature for Shark Week and the acclaimed docudrama miniseries Washington for the History Channel, which achieved record-breaking viewership numbers.

In 2021 and 2022, Reiné directed two episodes of the ambitious science fiction series Halo for Showtime/Paramount+ and Steven Spielberg’s Amblin Entertainment. That same year, he directed Colosseum, an epic series for the History Channel exploring the rise and fall of the Roman Empire.

Also in 2021, Reiné directed and produced Fistful of Vengeance, a fast-paced martial arts action feature for Netflix starring Iko Uwais and Lewis Tan. Shot in Thailand, the film premiered on February 17, 2022, quickly becoming the number-one movie in the U.S. and remaining in the global Top 10 for weeks thanks to its groundbreaking action choreography.

In 2022, he returned to the History Channel to direct the epic docuseries Ancient Empires. That same year, he also began directing and producing the Dutch feature film Line of Fire, a gripping modern war drama about a decorated Afghan War veteran whose public honor turns into personal downfall. The film premiered theatrically across Europe in September 2023 and launched globally on Netflix in December 2023.

Roel kicked off 2023 by directing the international action thriller Classified, starring Aaron Eckhart, Tim Roth, and Abigail Breslin. Filmed on location in Malta, the film was released all over the world in 2024 and in 2025 it became the number one movie on Paramount+ and later number one on Hulu. Also 2025 he shot Savage Hunt, a movie about a bear attack, that he filmed with a real bear.
